The human insulin receptor is a heterotetrameric membrane glycoprotein consisting of disulfide-linked subunits in a β-α-α-β configuration. The β-subunit (95kDa) possesses a single transmembrane domain, whereas the α-subunit (135kDa) is completely extracellular.
